It’s in the Bible, folks, so it has to be true. – Matty Malaprop
If God really hates figs, why did he create fig trees? Is this a case of ‘guilty by association’?
After looking at the picture again, I’m wondering why Newton didn’t drop a fig from the tree to prove his theory.
Then…we would have Fig’s Newton Theory.
Mark11:12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
Hating figs is just the…….pits!
Figs! Raisins! Prunes! All created equal!
Haters of figs are just plum nasty!
In Mark 11:12 Jesus was talking about the fig tree as a metaphor of the people who were supposed to believe him. The tree was planted to provide figs. It failed to do so and was thus condemned. He was speaking about the obstinate people of his community who refused to believe him or bear the kind of fruit they are supposed to bear, like love, generosity, kindness, truthfulness, etc. Some good trees bear good fruit. Bad trees bear no good fruit. The bad trees need to be uprooted so good trees can be planted in their place. The uprooting can be active or can happen over time through mortality. (I love the 2nd law of thermodynamics. – the author was brilliant in creating it.)
Yes, but…
The metaphor was not about Jesus’ followers, but those who claimed to be following the Mosaic Laws. Jesus only had a handful of followers at the time and didn’t expect to have a LOT more very soon. Otherwise, yeah.
Second: It wasn’t Fig Season! Cursing your local fruit tree because it doesn’t have fruit in the middle of winter is just being spiteful.
^this this and this again.
Considering how many christian religions take bible verses at face value, it really is amazing that someone hasn’t pointed this out yet and said “christians can’t eat figs”.
OP may not realize it, but this is a pretty profound satire demonstrating the damaging effect that designer religions have on other religions.
Now, don’t go wrapping up peeps into the same crowd as the Westboros.
How is this a pun?
You’ve never heard of Westboro Baptist?
